Meat

I am really struggling with the idea of not eating meat. I really like meat. I might decide to take a step backwards and eat mostly vegetarian for a while with meat still in my diet and slowly work up to becoming vegetarian. Cold turkey is really difficult for me. I am doing another blog about vegetarian cooking and I will eat at least one meal sometimes two a day that are vegetarian. I will do my best to be green in other ways as well. I will mow our lawn with the push mower instead of the gas powered one and I will try hard to recycle and turn off lights when and where I can.

The challenge for this week try to keep and reuse paper and plastic bags that you get from the store. My family already does this. If you need some ideas here are some...
1. Use plastic grocery bags to pick up dog poo.
2.Use paper bags to hold and carry out recycling
3.Use plastic bags to carry your lunch in.
4.Be creative : )

  1. Reusing is definitely a good thing ... anything that keeps stuff out of a landfill helps the earth. And you have some great ideas for reusing grocery store bags. Even better, though ... reduce! Those bags from the grocery store need to be "created" so by not taking them in the first place (which means that stores don't have to buy more and manufacturers don't have to make more), we save natural resources. Try saying "no" to either paper or plastic and use a reusable bag instead.

When I became vegetarian, I went "cold turkey" ... that was a long time ago and I've never looked back. Meat has a lot of flavor so one of the things that I found helpful in vegetarian food is to really increase the flavor. I also found that trying to recreate meat dishes into vegetarian versions doesn't work ... our brain expects the food to taste like the meat version and when it doesn't, we're disappointed. So try some new and unusual meals ... ethnic foods are great (Indian, Mexican, Asian all lend themselves well to vegetarian options). Try making a "side dish" the main course ... for example, try making a baked potato the center of your meal and build around it (add a salad, some cooked veggies, etc.). Experiment with tofu, tempeh and beans/lentils.

You're off to a good start with this blog ... I'm looking forward to more posts!

  2. Cool beginnings for a first blog. You're young, take things slowly, doesn't matter whether it's blogging or going vege. I'm not, a vege that is, but I am a blogger. I've followed to see where you lead me, I'll link you blog on my Eco-Crap too. You can find that in my profile.
